A Fitting Award

My last post described an unpleasant event. My friend, Lois, fell on the first day of our trip to Chicago. A Surreal Experience: A Fall in Chicago. She had brought her second book, Marv Taking Charge: A Story of Bold Love and Courage to sell at Printers Row that weekend.

Lois spent the next three days in our hotel room recovering from multiple injuries including a broken wrist, rib, and nose. I took her place for her two-hour session at Printers Row, selling only one book.

Last week, while Lois was recuperating at her home in Sioux Falls, she received an email telling her that Marv Taking Charge is a Book of the Year Finalist in the Chicago Writers Association’s Indie Nonfiction category.

Congratulations, Lois, for a well deserved recognition. I hope this award eases the disappointment of my selling skills and the pain from your injuries.

After a long career in nursing--I was one of the first certified gerontological nurse practitioners--I am now a writer. My writings center around patients I have had over the years that continue to haunt my memory unless I record their stories. In addition, I write about growing older, confronting ageism, creativity and food. My memoir, "Stories from the Tenth Floor Clinic: A Nurse Practitioner Remembers" is available where ever books are sold.

  1. Thank you, Marianna, for your thoughtful words. And readers have to know how your nursing knowledge and skills helped ease my discomfort from my fall on a Thursday until getting me to my O’Hare terminal the following Monday. I am indebted!

  2. This is awesome for Lois! Get the word out. It will sell more books, and that will be wonderful because Lois’s book about Marv’s story is an important one!
